Adidas Thunder Run 24 - Training Plan
With just over 6 weeks to go until the Adidas Thunder Run I realised I needed to step up my training. (You may think its a bit late but I only ran my last marathon just over 2 weeks ago so I’m still at a reasonable level of training).
I tried looking up advice from runners in previous years but found details of any structured training plans lacking. This isn’t surprising really given...

Whats The Point?
This one is a little off topic but there are other aspects to my running beyond the actual act of running and this blog is one of them. So a post about this blog, or a post about the posts on this blog (getting a bit inception like there!) are still valid in my opinion.
This is the first time I’ve managed to keep a blog going for more than 2 posts. We’re only a little over a month and...

Edinburgh Marathon 2012 - The Event
My second marathon in 5 weeks was actually my second marathon ever. It went better than I expected in some aspects but not as well as I hoped. But more about that later, lets talk about the event as a whole first. I’m going to be a bit controversial here but I disagree with a lot of the reviews I’ve read which say this was a very well organised event. Elements of it were, however there...

Running A Marathon: What Pace?
So I’m sat on the train to Edinburgh for tomorrows marathon. It’s hot (the air-con is not working), there is a very noisy family sat in front of me and I’m trying to watch Step Brothers on my Laptop but being unsuccessful due to the first two points.
Naturally my mind started to wander to the race tomorrow, specifically what pace I was going to run at.
Now you may think its...

Foam Roller Update!
Following on from my earlier post, I have now been using a foam roller for a little over a week and there is a definite improvement. Overall my calves just feel “looser” I suppose is the only way to put it. I’ve not been putting many miles in this week due to tapering (I like to be WELL rested) but the runs I have been on have been void of the tight calf niggles I’ve been...

Foam Roller + Calves = Pain!
Since running my first marathon a few weeks ago my calves have been very tight. I can feel the tightness not just while running but also whilst simply lying in bed etc. After much research (read googling) I decided to splash out £15 of my hard-earned cash on a foam roller.
After looking up solutions to tight calves it became quickly apparent that I either needed a sports massage or could use a...

London Marathon 2013
Yep, I’ve only just finished 2012 but the ballot for 2013 opened this morning (and closed shortly after!) and I managed to get my entry in. Fingers crossed for a second year!

Recommended Reading - Born to Run
I’ve just finished reading Born to Run by Chris McDougall and thought I’d share my thoughts on it.
If you’re a runner then you may be aware of the role this book takes in the current barefoot running debate. In case you’re not I’ll summarise…
The book centres around the Tarahumara tribe in Mexico for who running long distances is a standard part of life. When...

New Blog - RelentlessRunning.Net →
So I’ve decided to set up a full blown blog! It’s early days so there’s not much there yet but I plan on updating several times a week so it should grow quickly. If you’ve got 5 minutes I’d appreciate any views and feedback!
I’ll still be posting to Tumblr though so don’t stop following!

So it’s been a busy week or two. I finally ran my first marathon, London, in a time of 4:33. Quite a bit slower than my target but in the end I’m actually quite happy. To be honest, I wish I’d listened to everyone’s advice and ignored time for this first one. It is just about getting round and enjoying it, something which is difficult when your focused on an ambitious...

Weekend Running
Well its been hectic so haven’t had time to post really. Anyway, here are the runs from this weekend:
A quick 5 miles on Saturday….
Followed by a much slower and harder 21 miles today.
I learnt a valuable lesson today, do not run tired, under-fuelled and dehydrated. All in all, not the most pleasant run I’ve been on. I know its meant to be hard, but crashing at mile 13 of...

Running Update - Tues & Wed Runs
2 runs to post today as I didn’t get around to posting yesterdays run. First up, 5k in 23:31! I had to do a quick one as I had to work so I thought I’d go for an all out 5k. My PB in a race (I’ve only done one 5k) was 27 mins. Granted that was 17 months ago at the very start of my running but still, I’m pleased with hitting 23:31 in a training run. Very tempted to try and...

Sunday Long Run - 20 Miles / 3hrs 30mins
A beautiful day in London today so I went for a nice long run along the river again. I had company this week as my long run partner joined me after a taking out for injury. Running with someone to talk to definitely makes it easier. Well, thats another 20 in the bank, only one more “long” run next week and I start my taper. Now for some serious food…

Friday Night Run
Well after a long week, that certainly made me feel better. It also sapped the last of my energy so a quick bowl of pasta and off to bed for me. What a rock ‘n’ roll life I lead!

Running always makes better...
I had to postpone my “midweek” run of 10m due to work commitments last night. So now I need to do it tonight, which after a long week and a lack of sleep (again due to work), its the last thing I feel like. On top of that its just generally been one of those weeks where you really just want to go to the pub and say screw it!
But despite that, I’m going to go home after work, put...

Midweek Speed Session - 5 Miles / 40Mins
Managed an average pace of a little over 8 min/mi which is quite good for me (my best 10k race time is 53 mins). Looks like I could have gone sub 50 min if I’d gone for the 10k distance, I was still feeling quite good but decided to stick to my training plan. (Last time I pushed it I ended up out for 2 weeks so I’m a bit overly cautious at the moment!)
Think I might try a 10k at...

Sunday Long Run - 18 Miles / 2hrs 50mins
Well it was hard work, the furthest I’ve ever run and it was definitely hurting towards the end. The first 15 was easier than the 15 I did last week though so I must be building endurance!

CamelBak Classic
This has been keeping me hydrated on my longer runs. It’s small enough not to notice but carries 2l of water and has a small pocked for any cards / keys you need to take with you. Although space is limited, there is room to squeeze a couple of gels or powerbars in with the reservoir.
Currently less than £40 (I got mine for £27 but that sales over now), its a no-brainer if you don’t...
